Luzern: Alpine Vistas

Luzern Ferris Wheel as the sun sets.

Soaking in the views from the Luzern Ferris Wheel feels like stepping into a postcard. As you rise above the city, you can spot the sparkling Lake Lucerne, the charming old town rooftops, and the snowy peaks of Mount Pilatus in the distance. The slow spin gives you time to breathe it all in — the calm water, the mountain air, and that soft golden light that makes everything glow. Whether you’re snapping photos or just vibing with the view, the Luzern Ferris Wheel is the perfect way to see the city from a whole new angle.

Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge)

The Luzern Footbridge, officially known as the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), is one of Switzerland’s most iconic landmarks — and Europe’s oldest surviving covered wooden bridge. It was built in 1333 as part of Lucerne’s fortifications, linking the old and new parts of the city across the Reuss River. Inside, the bridge once featured over 100 triangular paintings from the 17th century, depicting scenes from Lucerne’s and Switzerland’s history.

In 1993, a devastating fire destroyed much of the bridge, but it was quickly rebuilt to preserve its heritage. Today, the Kapellbrücke stands as a beautiful blend of medieval charm and modern restoration, symbolizing Lucerne’s enduring spirit.

The Pilatus Railway

The trip to the top of Pilatus on the Pilatusbahn was extreme, both in the occasional “big” views, and in the somewhat harrowing angle of ascent! The transport is one of Switzerland’s most remarkable engineering feats — and the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. Opened in 1889, it climbs from Alpnachstad to the summit of Mount Pilatus, reaching gradients of up to 48% over a 4.6-kilometer route. Originally powered by steam, the line has been fully electric since 1937. I rode this apparatus up the snow-capped mountain, and took the more conventional Pilatus panoramic gondola back down. Both were amazing experiences, even on this foggy day. There are more photos of Pilatus in the Luzern Gallery above.

The journey takes about 30 minutes, winding through alpine meadows, forests, and rugged cliffs before revealing sweeping views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks. Whether you’re visiting in summer for hiking or winter for snow-covered panoramas, the Pilatus Railway offers an unforgettable ride into the Swiss sky.
